How long until I can play sports after ACL surgery?

Plan on about 9 months minimum before returning to cutting and pivoting sports after ACL reconstruction — and that's 9 months plus passed strength-and-movement testing, not just a date. The research is blunt: in young athletes, every month you return before the nine-month mark multiplies the risk of tearing the new graft.

Why nine months when your knee feels fine at five?

Because "feels fine" and "is ready" are different tissues. The graft is still biologically maturing well past month six, and the strength, landing mechanics, and confidence that protect it lag behind the swelling going down. The five-month knee that feels great is precisely the dangerous one — it writes checks the graft can't cash yet.

What return-to-play actually requires here

  • Strength symmetry: the surgical leg within ~90% of the other on tested strength.
  • Hop and landing testing: movement quality under fatigue, not just in a quiet clinic moment.
  • Sport-specific progression: practice before scrimmage before games — with the rehab team and surgeon signing off together.

Parents: when the club schedule argues with the protocol, we're happy to be the bad guy. That's what we're for. More on young athletes: Youth & Family.
